Shaping a Meaningful Information Literacy Plan

Registration is now closed.
NOTE: 11.10.2011 Please email lynn.kanne@seattlecolleges.edu if you'd like to attend on a space-available basis.

Description

Choosing activities and initiatives to focus on requires a clear idea of where we are headed. An information literacy plan helps define our vision, not only to describe what we do now, but to help guide our decision making, particularly as many of us move ahead with more work but fewer people to do it.

An information literacy plan articulates both vision and goals for an academic library. Since everything a library does should support information literacy in some form, this plan can cover the whole library. This workshop will introduce models and methods for creating a plan that supports the goals and reflects institutional values. Participants will leave with a template for their own college's plan and the skills to envision and create one.

Some of us began rewriting or revamping our IL plans at Dipping into Immersion at Pack Forest this summer, but there is still more work to do. And for those who weren't there, this workshop is a good opportunity to dig in. Librarians are encouraged to attend in teams with library directors and as many library faculty as possible to begin or continue work on your Information Literacy Plan. Discipline faculty with an interest in the larger mission of the library may attend as well.

Librarians and Library Administrators

Where?

Highline Community College -- Mt. Constance Room, Building 8

How?

Travel: Reimbursement is available for transportation and lodging within the state guidelines. You are responsible for following your college's travel procedure.  We strongly encourage ridesharing because parking is limited. One hotel that has been recommended is the Fairfield Mariott.

Stipends & substitutes: Funds are available to provide substitutes if needed during your absence. Part-time faculty attending outside of their paid working hours may request stipends (based on $45/hr including benefits - maximum TBA).

Requesting Reimbursement

Each college library is responsible for mailing a single reimbursement request by January 13, 2012. The reimbursement request must include a signature from a library director or dean.

Individuals can be reimbursed by their library either before or after the reimbursement check is received depending on local arrangements. Since internal procedures vary at each college, we cannot advise on how to claim reimbursement, but the library administrator should be able to help with that process. For outstanding reimbursements, check with your college library about your claim.

Workshop Preparation

Please prepare for the workshop with these two tasks:

  1. Take a look at the ACRL’s Characteristics of Programs of Information Literacy  that Illustrate Best Practices and consider the following questions:
    1. Which of these practices are in place at your library?
    2. Which would you most like to be doing? How much effort would it take?
  2. Gather up your library’s current IL plan if you have one or any planning documents with your goals, strategic plan,  etc. Bring this to the workshop.
